PRP Hair Therapy
Hair loss is a major concern for many men and women, whether it is brought on by age, genetics, hormones, medical conditions, or from styling practices and/or products. With current advances in research within the hair restoration industry, new procedures have been created to help fight the issue. Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is an emerging nonsurgical procedure for people that is showing remarkable benefits in slowing, stopping, and reversing hair loss or helping to improve the tone and/or texture of your skin. PRP has shown promising results in patients with alopecia areata and thinning eyebrows. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Eric Wilkerson of Fort Lauderdale Dermatology is one of only a small number of physicians to provide this innovative therapy in Fort Lauderdale, FL. By blending a strong solution of growth factors and bioactive proteins, Dr. Wilkerson can help to strengthen the function of your hair, resulting in thicker, longer, healthy locks.
Any individual suffering from balding is potentially an ideal candidate for PRP hair therapy while patients with early hair loss tend to yield the best results. PRP is best suited for those with androgenic alopecia, which is a genetically determined type of hair loss that usually occurs on the top part of the head. In women, this may look like a widening part.
A nonsurgical procedure, the PRP treatment is a short one-hour in-office visit. The procedure starts with obtaining a little bit of your blood and placing it in a special machine, which spins the blood at high speed to remove the platelets from the remaining portion of the blood components. Next, the platelet-rich plasma is introduced into regions of the scalp that are thinning or bald. The treatment regimen includes four or more initial monthly treatments followed by a maintenance treatment every 4 – 6 months depending on your response and needs. Dr. Wilkerson will recommend a variety of additional treatments that work in conjunction with the PRP to maximize your results.
What to Expect
There's no downtime after this procedure with virtually no limitations or constraints. If anything, patients can develop some redness, minimal swelling, and mild discomfort to the treated regions. These symptoms may last up to 48 hours. While outcomes differ for each individual, cosmetic results are usually seen approximately 4 – 6 months after the first treatment and may continue to improve for as much as a full year following therapy. Since PRP is not a permanent option for reversing hair loss, maintenance treatments are highly recommended every 4 – 6 months. It's important to note that PRP does not grow new hair follicles in places where you're already bald. It's utilized to reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will create fuller, healthier, longer hair fibers.
