PRP Hair Therapy
Hair loss is a major concern for many men and women, whether it is brought on by age, genetics, hormones, medical conditions, or from styling practices and/or products. With current advances in research within the hair restoration industry, new procedures have been created to help fight the issue. Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is an emerging nonsurgical procedure for people that is showing remarkable benefits in slowing, stopping, and reversing hair loss or helping to improve the tone and/or texture of your skin. PRP has shown promising results in patients with alopecia areata and thinning eyebrows. Cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Eric Wilkerson of Fort Lauderdale Dermatology is one of only a small number of physicians to provide this innovative therapy in Fort Lauderdale, FL. By blending a strong solution of growth factors and bioactive proteins, Dr. Wilkerson can help to strengthen the function of your hair, resulting in thicker, longer, healthy locks.
"I’ve seen Dr. Wilkerson three times now and have never felt like it’s been a rushed visit like other dermatologists I’ve been to. He’s been able to drastically improve skin issues that I’ve dealt with for years. Very clean and professional practice."- M.H. / Google / Nov 13, 2019
"Dr Wilkerson was referred to me by my primary care physician and I am very thankful he was. After being in a trauma accident sustaining multiple wounds, I encountered a rash and irritation around them. I could not afford to get any infection while healing all my injuries. Dr Wilkerson and his assistant Jackie were friendly and gentle. They asked many questions and thoroughly examined the injury site. The doctor’s level of care was exceptional and he took his time to answer all my questions patiently. His treatment plan ‘cured’ my issue and I look forward to my follow up appointment. Jackie was courteous and gracious enough to call me a week after my appointment to follow up and see how I was feeling and how my recovery was progressing."- S.D. / Google / Oct 12, 2019
"Each time I visit the offices of Ft. Lauderdale, I feel compelled to write a great review. Once is never enough. Dr. Wilkerson and his Medical Assistant, Jackie provide the most caring, thoughtful and most important, knowledgeable treatment one could want. The office is clean, the doctor is very well trained and as a bonus, one never gets the feeling of being rushed. I wish all the other doctors I have seen over the years, dermatologist or not were as caring and just plain nice. And as a bonus, even in these terrible Covid times Jackie has been known to provide a glass of water or a cup of coffee, unheard of in most physician's offices today Once again, if I could give them more than five stars, I would double them."- J.F. / Google / May 18, 2021
"Great Dermatology office! Not only were they prompt with contacting me after my initial appointment request, ( unlike multiple other places that I have STILL yet to hear back from ) they got me in within a couple weeks, all through e-mail and texts, which is always my preferred method of contact. Dr. Wilkerson was very nice, calming and informative during my skin cancer screening and I'm glad my PCP suggested this office. Will definitely be recommending to family and friends in the future if the need arises."- T.S. / Google / May 12, 2021
"Great Doctor, great assistant. In my unfortunately many years of treatment for skin cancers I have seen several doctors, some good, some not so."- J.H. / Facebook / Apr 27, 2021
PRP Hair Therapy Candidates
Any individual suffering from balding is potentially an ideal candidate for PRP hair therapy while patients with early hair loss tend to yield the best results. PRP is best suited for those with androgenic alopecia, which is a genetically determined type of hair loss that usually occurs on the top part of the head. In women, this may look like a widening part.
PRP Hair Therapy Technique
A nonsurgical procedure, the PRP treatment is a short one-hour in-office visit. The procedure starts with obtaining a little bit of your blood and placing it in a special machine, which spins the blood at high speed to remove the platelets from the remaining portion of the blood components. Next, the platelet-rich plasma is introduced into regions of the scalp that are thinning or bald. The treatment regimen includes four or more initial monthly treatments followed by a maintenance treatment every 4 – 6 months depending on your response and needs. Dr. Wilkerson will recommend a variety of additional treatments that work in conjunction with the PRP to maximize your results.
PRP Hair Therapy Expectations
There's no downtime after this procedure with virtually no limitations or constraints. If anything, patients can develop some redness, minimal swelling, and mild discomfort to the treated regions. These symptoms may last up to 48 hours. While outcomes differ for each individual, cosmetic results are usually seen approximately 4 – 6 months after the first treatment and may continue to improve for as much as a full year following therapy. Since PRP is not a permanent option for reversing hair loss, maintenance treatments are highly recommended every 4 – 6 months. It's important to note that PRP does not grow new hair follicles in places where you're already bald. It's utilized to reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will create fuller, healthier, longer hair fibers.
