About Microneedling
If over-the-counter skin treatments are no longer proving effective, but you are not ready for surgical procedures, nonsurgical skin rejuvenation with microneedling may be just the solution you need. Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Eric Wilkerson is pleased to offer SkinPen microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) at his office in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Microneedling uses multiple fine-gauge needles to safely and effectively create micro-injuries in the skin. The micro-injuries prompt the natural production of collagen and elastin, two nutrients that increase the health and appearance of your complexion and heal skin wounds. Easily performed along with other skin treatments, such as serums or natural injection therapy, microneedling can help reduce scars, pores, stretch marks, and other cosmetic concerns to improve skin quality, texture, and tone. Make an appointment for a consultation at Fort Lauderdale Dermatology to hear more about the benefits of microneedling and how to customize the treatment for your needs and goals.

Ideal Candidates
Microneedling creates multiple micro-injuries in the skin that stimulate your body's natural healing response and encourage remodeling of damaged areas for a smoother, more aesthetic appearance. You could be a candidate for microneedling treatments if you have slight or mild skin issues, like a decrease in elasticity, scars, or rough skin texture. Offering anti-aging effects, microneedling builds collagen in the skin to provide rejuvenation and improve skin texture, quality, and tone by targeting fine lines and wrinkles. Collagen induction therapy treatments may also minimize the appearance of stretch marks, pigmentation from sun damage, acne scars, and pores. In general, elastin and collagen require five or more months to have an impact on the skin. However, with a microneedling procedure, you can look forward to enjoying results that appear natural and gain better overall skin health.
Procedure Technique
A SkinPen microneedling procedure is performed in one of our state-of-the-art treatment rooms and typically only takes around 30 – 60 minutes to complete. Patients should arrive without their makeup on or be prepared to remove it upon arrival. Before your procedure begins, we will cleanse your face and apply a topical anesthetic, which will be allowed to numb your skin over a period of 30 minutes prior to beginning. Next, the areas of skin being treated will be cleansed again and a serum will be applied before the handpiece is evenly passed over the treatment area. After the microneedling procedure is finished, a topical treatment, such as a vitamin-infused serum, may be applied to help the nutrients penetrate deeper into the skin. A post-procedure skin care regimen and a moisturizer with UV protection will be discussed and implemented prior to the end of your appointment. We ask that patients do not apply any other products to their skin for up to 24 hours following treatment.
What to Expect
Following the procedure, you might develop some swelling and redness for about one day. However, these effects should subside on their own. It may take up to six months for the elastin and collagen levels to increase until you notice significant changes in the appearance and health of your complexion. To achieve the best possible results and experience lasting skin benefits, Dr. Wilkerson may advise you to schedule 3 – 6 initial treatments performed at 4 – 6-week intervals. Following your initial treatments, touch-up sessions can be scheduled in 4 – 6-month intervals. Dr. Wilkerson will help patients understand how best to care for their skin and determine when appointments should be scheduled. To further protect your results, Dr. Wilkerson may create a customized skin care regimen for you.
