What is an IPL photofacial?

If you're bothered by dark spots, sun damage, blood vessels, lesions, or other skin imperfections, an IPL (intense pulsed light) photofacial treatment at Fort Lauderdale Dermatology can help dramatically revitalize and rejuvenate your skin's appearance. Board-certified and fellowship-trained dermatologist Dr. Eric Wilkerson and his experienced team use the next-generation M22™ Stellar IPL by Lumenis® that employs focused light energy to stimulate the natural regeneration process and increase collagen production. The results? Clearer, smoother, healthier, and younger-looking skin without the cost and recovery time of surgical procedures. If you'd like to learn more about the skin-renewing benefits of a personalized IPL photofacial treatment plan, contact our Fort Lauderdale, FL office today to schedule a consultation.

Ideal Candidates

An IPL photofacial works deep within the layers of your skin to correct several complexion problems (particularly sun spots and brown lesions) with minimal or no downtime. Candidates for an IPL photofacial at Fort Lauderdale Dermatology may have a combination of problems with their complexion, such as sun damage, rosacea, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), rough texture, visible pores, flushing, melasma, sun and age spots, or spider veins. Dr. Wilkerson or a member of his team will assess your skin to see if you can benefit from IPL during your private consultation.

How Does an IPL photofacial Work?

The specific wavelengths of light emitted by an IPL photofacial help your body to get rid of damaged, older skin cells while prompting it to produce healthy new skin plus new collagen and elastin. Because IPL sends out multiple light wavelengths, it can treat a variety of skin problems. The cutting-edge M22 system offers various filters, allowing us to tailor each treatment to your skin needs.

IPL photofacials only take about 20 – 30 minutes and are performed at our Fort Lauderdale, FL office in one of our comfortable treatment rooms. To start the IPL facial, we will wash and dry the skin to be treated before covering your eyes with protective goggles. The IPL photofacial is performed using a handheld device that will be passed over the skin sending pulses of light energy deep into the skin. While some patients may feel some minor discomfort during a photofacial, most find it generally very tolerable for the short treatment length.

What to Expect After An IPL Treatment

There is no downtime needed with an IPL photofacial, but you may leave your appointment with your skin a little inflamed and red, similar to a mild sunburn. This will decrease naturally in several hours but we do suggest you apply an ointment on the skin's surface to minimize any irritation and promote healing. It also helps to use anti-inflammatory medication to ease swelling. Over the course of 2 – 5 days, the sun damage and other irregularities under the skin will come to the surface skin layers and then begin to flake away naturally. It is very important to protect your skin from the sun as often as possible after a photofacial and to not pick at your skin. While you should have visible results after your first treatment, your complexion will achieve the best results after multiple IPL sessions. Dr. Wilkerson recommends most patients get 3 – 6 sessions done every four weeks at Fort Lauderdale Dermatology to keep their skin looking youthful and vibrant.
