About Cryosurgery
Cryosurgery, also known as cryotherapy, is a nonsurgical treatment to eliminate skin growths. At Fort Lauderdale Dermatology, skilled dermatologist Dr. Eric Wilkerson performs cryosurgery to get rid of unwanted skin growths, such as lesions, sun spots, skin tags, and age spots (keratoses). Ideal Candidates
Cryosurgery may be used if you have an unwanted skin growth, such as an age spot or skin tag, that you want removed for cosmetic reasons. The growth could be on a visible area of your body (such as your face) or it may be in an area where it is constantly irritated by clothing or jewelry (such as your chest). Cryosurgery may also be used if you have a precancerous (actinic keratosis) or early cancerous (basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma) growths in your upper skin layers. Cryosurgery may be combined with another skin cancer treatment or performed multiple times for more effective results.
Procedure Technique
Cryosurgery is a simple procedure that can be performed in a short time. At the start of the procedure, Dr. Wilkerson will sanitize the area. A numbing agent can be put on the area to help minimize any discomfort. Using a cotton swab or spray, the liquid nitrogen is administered and immediately destroys all cells it is in contact with, including the lesion. Dr. Wilkerson will carefully apply the treatment so only the targeted skin is affected. Following the procedure, the area will be cleaned and bandaged.
What to Expect
After your cryosurgery, you should be free to leave our office and return to your day. The treated area may be red or swollen and a blister may develop. Dr. Wilkerson will go over how to clean and care for the treated skin to avoid an infection. You should gently clean the area 1 – 2 times per day until healed over. In some cases, you may need to schedule a follow-up appointment at Fort Lauderdale Dermatology so Dr. Wilkerson can assess your healing and determine if another treatment is needed.
